New 10-digit dialing coming soon to Quebec

With the growing popularity of new communications services, the demand for new numbers will soon exceed the supply. The solution:a new area code overlay will be introduced - 581 in Quebec. Because of this, you will now have to dial 10-digits the area code followed by the telephone number - for all local calls. The new area codes will be assigned to new numbers only; existing numbers will remain unchanged.

When does 10-digit dialing begin?

A "permissive dialing" period begins on June 21, 2008 to help callers adjust to dialing 10 digits for all local calls. During this period, callers who dial seven digits will be reminded to dial 10 digits next time they place a call. Beginning on September 6, 2008 all calls must be made with the area code included or they will not be connected.

Why Wait? Because our network is already set up for 10-digits dialing you can start today.

What are the most important Changes?

Data transmissions may be especially affected by this change, making it vital that you reprogram your phones and communications equipment as soon as possible.

What's not affected?

All 3-digit numbers, including 211,311,411,611, 811, 911 and emergency service (where applicable) will remain the same.

You will not be required to change your existing telephone number. The new area code will only be applied to new phone numbers

The geographic boundaries that govern long distance will not change and long distance calls will still be dialed 1+ area code + phone number.
